How To Use This Course

This Course Does Not Include Physical Skills Training
This course is to be used as a text for a self-defense training course. It can be used as a measurement gauge for other self-defense training programs. It can be used for whatever the reader desires. The important thing is that information and skills taught are used properly, with the objective of creating a safer environment. One theme repeatedly presented throughout this book is that physical self defense should always be the very last choice of action. There are no guarantees when physical conflict erupts – no one is invincible. In any physical conflict, someone is going to get hurt – probably all parties involved will suffer some level of injury. Recognition and avoidance should be the first and primary self defense action taken in all situations. If that doesn’t work (some people’s jobs require direct confrontation), then try to communicate your way out of trouble – this takes skill and practice, too! If unable to avoid a problem and communicating doesn’t resolve a problem, then the next step is to exit the situation. This means create some level of barrier between you and the “trouble”. That may mean run away, it may mean walk away, it may mean get into a locked car – the important thing is that you place yourself in a safer environment out of reach of the aggressor.

The last action for self defense is physical defense. Now, physical defense does not always mean striking back with intent to do physical harm to someone. It could mean blocking or re-directing an attack in the hopes that if the assailant sees you are going to fight back, he or she may back off (you probably were not chosen as a target because the bad person was looking for a challenge on that day!). However, if you do decide that you must fight back to regain your (and your loved ones) personal safety, then you must do it with confidence and 100% effort. There can be no hesitation or doubt in your mind if you want the greatest chance for success. Your chances for success will be enhanced if you have some level of experience in dealing with such situations. If a real street attack is the first time you have to think about defending yourself, you probably will not be well prepared to handle your body’s physiological response (adrenaline rush – loss of coordination and mental clarity) to the attack. Plus, if you have never practiced executing evasion movements, redirection techniques striking techniques, loosening techniques or escape techniques, your level of proficiency in these movement patterns will be less than optimal.

What is read, learned and practiced from this course will help prepare an individual for potential conflict situations. I hope that the awareness information is enough to enhance a person’s safety by educating about potentially compromised situations. The skill level and knowledge gained by reading and studying each section will assist a person in becoming and appearing more confident, thus reducing the risk of becoming a target for violence. However, if a person does become a target for violence, the skills and knowledge learned and practiced from this book should help a person achieve a successful outcome (“success” can only be defined by each individual and will be influenced by many variables of any given situation) for any situation.

The course follows a set sequence for the subject matter presented. Each section builds a strong foundation for the following sections. This method of information delivery provides the reader with a logical sequence of learning activities that builds confidence and improves proficiency!
